Between Mountains and Traditions: Pamplona's Semana Mayor, Pamplona 2025

Holy Week in Pamplona is not only a tradition: it is a living manifestation of the identity of a people that, every year, turns its streets into stages of faith, art and collective memory. From April 13 to 20, 2025, this colonial city in the heart of the department of Norte de Santander dresses in solemnity, recollection and beauty, giving life to the Semana Mayor Pamplonesa, one of the most recognized religious and cultural celebrations in eastern Colombia.
Pamplona: a city that walks with history
To speak of Holy Week in Pamplona is to speak of centuries of living tradition. From the first missionaries who arrived in colonial times to the present generations, the people of Pamplona have made of this week a space of deep spiritual meaning, but also of artistic and communitarian expression.

Founded in 1549, Pamplona is a city that breathes history in every corner. Its colonial and republican architecture, cobblestone streets and strong cultural vocation have made it an emblematic tourist destination in Colombia, especially during Holy Week. A former episcopal see since the 19th century, it retains its devotional character reflected in an active liturgical life and in the committed participation of its citizens in the processions.
An agenda that combines devotion, art and culture
The Children's Holy Week, which this year celebrates its 34th edition under the motto "Children pilgrims of hope", marks the beginning of the activities. In it, the youngest children learn about faith, hope and tradition while participating in processions, workshops and artistic presentations.
The programming of the Pamplona's Semana Mayor 2025 is extensive and carefully organized:
- Fridayof Sorrows (April 11): opening with Solemn Vespers and the traditional Penitential Stations of the Cross to Christ the King, from the Sanctuary of the Lord of the Humilladero to the Mirador.
- Saturday of Dolores (April 12): youth workshops, cultural events and the theatrical presentation En Sus Pasos at Plaza Agueda Gallardo.
- Palm Sunday (April 13): blessing of branches, procession to the Santa Clara Cathedral, and children's activities such as painting and puppet workshops.
- Easter Monday (April 14): Procession of the Fallen Lord, masses and opening of the International Festival of Sacred Music Choir.
- Holy Tuesday (April 15): homage to the Lord of Humility, with Eucharist, museum exhibits and a solemn procession through traditional neighborhoods.
- Holy Wednesday (April 16): homage to Jesus the Nazarene, with the Children's Procession, solemn masses and sacred concerts.
- Holy Thursday (April 17): Children's Procession of the Holy Supper and Visit to the Monuments: the entire city becomes a space of Eucharistic contemplation.
- Good Friday (April 18): Holy Penitential Stations of the Cross for Peace, the emotional unbinding and the Procession of the Holy Sepulcher, accompanied by choirs from colonial balconies.
- Holy Saturday (April 19): Procession of the Virgen de la Soledad, murals for peace and the great Easter Vigil with blessing of the fire.
- Easter Sunday (April 20): traditional procession of Las Carreritas de San Pedro y San Juan, followed by the solemn Easter Eucharist.

Beyond faith: a comprehensive tourism experience
Although Holy Week in Pamplona has a deep spiritual meaning, it is also an ideal opportunity to discover the rich heritage, culture and gastronomy of this historic city:
- Visit the Museum of Religious Art, located in a colonial mansion.
- Explore the Museo Casa Anzoátegui, with exhibits on art, history and local culture.
- Enjoy the typical gastronomy: mute santandereano, empanadas de iglesia, carne oreada, and handmade sweets made by nuns and local communities.
- Have a coffee or hot chocolate around the Plaza Agueda Gallardo, the heart of the city's cultural and processional life.
Handicraft markets offer unique souvenirs: seed rosaries, hand-carved religious images, traditional weavings and decorative candles made by local artisans.
Pamplona sounds like sacred music
One of the most appreciated components of this celebration is the International Choral Festival of Sacred Music, which in 2025 celebrates its 23rd edition. Local, national and international choirs offer concerts in venues such as the Sanctuary of the Lord of Humilladero, the Santa Clara Cathedral, the San Juan de Dios Chapel... and the Cariongo Hotel, which also becomes a sonorous and spiritual space.
This festival enhances the beauty of the liturgies and strengthens the cultural identity of Pamplona, reinforcing the connection between art, spirituality and community.
